Bowling Queens in town

Feeling patriotic today, we went to cheer the Malaysian team who were in town for the Queens USBC Bowling tournament from April 28 - May 2 at the AMC Bowling Center in Matthews.
Malaysia was represented by 7 contestants and Shalin Zulklifli and Esther Cheah were one of them. I told Jason that Shalin is the bowling icon in Malaysia. It would be like watching Michael Jordan play basketball.
It was easy to identify the Malaysian team because they were all wearing orange jerseys with a "Team Malaysia" logo at the back.
Other foreign entrants were from Singapore, Canada, Japan, Australia, the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Venezuela.
The Queens feature a field of more than 300 bowlers who will compete for a $200,000 prize fund and $30,000 first prize. It is recognized as one of the most prestigious and hardest tournaments to win.

This was in the news on the USBC bowl.com website this evening :

Zulkifli leads contingent of Malaysian bowlers in USBC Queens
MATTHEWS, N.C. - World Bowling Writers Hall of Fame member Shalin Zulkifli and her teammates on the Malaysian national team came to the 2007 USBC Queens to compete against the best the world has to offer.

It will be televised live for the first time by ESPN2 May 2 at 7 p.m. Eastern.
Who knows, you may be able to see us as ardent supporters holding a Malaysian flag on the backseats. And I'll get my five seconds of fame :)

The Maylasian version of the Tifosi.. did you guys don the yellow body paint for this one? :)

Missed one opportunity to say Hi when Shalin went to get a drink. They were bowling non-stop so we just stood around at the back watching.

We only spent an hour or so there and had to leave to run other errands. Each team plays for 3 hours I think.

Brian, it was more like just a Tifosa.

No yellow body paint. I realized I don't even own a patriotic Malaysian t-shirt.

Small world. What are the odds that these Malaysian superstars would come to sleepy-town Matthews? Ok, not so sleepy, but heck, who knew they were famous for bowling????

What's funny is that if I were back in M'sia, I might not even have gone to watch them bowl at all.

yeah you'd get seriously patriotic when you're away from home -- i guess it's kinda the case of taking things for granted. :-)
